I take my cinematic love-at-first-sight moments very seriously. The year was 1988 when Doordarshan, Chitrahaar and Chayageet were still my gateways to an imagined heaven.
Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was about to enter my life. If my memory doesn’t fail me, Gazab Ka Hai Din was the first song I happened to watch on Chayageet.
Or should I say Aamir Khan? Yep, there he was. Chalk in hand with a backpack, trying to figure his way out of a forest. I didn’t register Juhi Chawla much at this point. As far as I am concerned she could have been a tree. (I love Juhi; this is perhaps not the time to mention buying QSQT chaniya-cholis and wearing them in Bombay!)
Watch how casually and subtly he strips (well played, Mansoor Khan) to go look for her. Hmmm wonder whose idea that was. Nope, that wasn’t my moment. It was just after, when he runs and stops at a tree.
There is the flicker of relief when he spots her. That moment. And then he sings Kya Kahoon Mera Jo Haal Hai. Sigh!
My favourite fantasy post QSQT has always been running away and living on a hill, which director Mansoor is actually doing now for real. Enjoy this song, while I go and indulge in it once more.
